Hands-On Conservation Education at Prairie Fork
We offer educational facilities and hands-on educational opportunities throughout the year to any school or group interested in pursuing outdoor conservation education. It is our goal to raise the awareness and knowledge of the need for conservation among students of Missouri. Public use is limited to appointment only.
Developed in conjunction with Discover Nature Schools and Missouri Learning Standards, the focus of our educational programs is to investigate science outdoors, or as Mrs. Jones says, “Learn, get dirty and have fun.” There is no charge to visitors for any use of Prairie Fork. In fact, grants are available through Discover Nature Schools to help with the cost of school group visits to Prairie Fork.

Raising Awareness and Knowledge of Conservation
The outreach and education mission of Prairie Fork Conservation Area is to raise the awareness and knowledge of conservation among all visitors. This is accomplished through hands-on educational opportunities showcasing the uniqueness of the area and its emphasis on natural communities.
Natural Communities, Their Processes, and Their Functions
The theme of Prairie Fork Conservation Area’s outreach and educational programs are “Natural Communities, Their Processes, and Their Functions.” Through participating in hands-on exploration, visitors will learn about Mid-Missouri’s natural communities, the issues affecting natural community management, and what makes natural communities important to Missouri plants and wildlife.
Discover Nature Schools
We support the Missouri Department of Conservation’s new MLS-aligned program called Discover Nature Schools. Through this fun and hands-on curriculum, we are bringing students outdoors and closer to nature.
Learn More About the ProgramOur Facilities
Facilities at Prairie Fork are primitive, but there are parking areas for buses, outdoor toilet facilities, and a water spigot. Individuals with physical challenges can be accommodated. There is an education building available during inclement weather; however, as our activities are all outdoors, we recommend scheduling an alternate rain date.
Self Guided Trails
We have six self-guided trails that allow exploration of the different habitats such as prairie, savanna, woodland, forest, wetland, pond & streams that comprise Prairie Fork. Trail maps are available upon confirmation of your appointment.
